梅雨が明けたとか。あっついな、夏だなぁ。
でも昨日今日と湿度はそんなに高くないので、風が抜けると気持ちいい。夏にな
るといつも着るベトナムで買ったさらっふわっの麻のシャツで過ごしたらすごく
いい感じ。
連休はずっとバイトなので日中は店番。実家では最近料理はあまりしないので、
本ばかり読んでる。
「象がおどるるとき」読了。ストーリーの軸は、太平洋戦争時の日本占領下のフ
ィリピン人一家と、その一家と同じ家に暮らしているいろんな人々が、捕虜にな
ったり危険な目に遇いながら生き延びる数日間をそれぞれの視点で描くものだが
、合間合間にそれぞれの人物による物語がみんなの前で語られ、小説に織り交ぜ
られて、何層にも世界が増してゆく。家族や愛や自然や目に見えないもののこと
や、見た目の美しさや物質の豊かさについて、何をたいせつにすべきかについて
、語られるそれぞれの物語。強姦を受けたあとであれほど憎んでいたマカピリを
好きになってしまう姉とか、ラストの運びとか、人間の機微についてはちょっと
都合がよすぎる点はさておき、「物語の力」を意識する小説だった。ぐんぐん読
みすすめられること自体も楽しかった。
夜はもらいものの野菜たちでラタトゥイユを作った。じゃがいも（アンデス）と
かぼちゃを皮ごと入れたら黄色と赤と緑のきれいなきれいな協奏、目にもおいし
い夏野菜だ。
そうはいっても蓼科の夏ってこれから一ヶ月くらいで、すごく短いのだ。盆を過
ぎれば夕方は肌寒いし、目一杯夏を楽しもうっと。

Mrs. Agathe’s dishwasher quit working so she called a repairman. Since she had to go to work the next day, she told him, “I’ll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I’ll mail you the check. Oh, and by the way…don’t worry about my Doberman. He won’t bother you. But, whatever you do, do NOT under ANY circumstances talk to my parrot!” When the repairman arrived at Mrs. Agathe’s apartment the next day, he discovered the biggest and meanest looking Doberman he had ever seen. But just as she had said, the dog simply laid there on the carpet, watching the repairman go about his business. However, the whole time the parrot drove him nuts with his incessant cursing, yelling and name-calling. Finally the repairman couldn’t contain himself any longer and yelled, “Shut up, you stupid ugly bird!” To which the parrot replied, “Get him, Spike!”
