BBQ用コンロ、購入後の使用が2度目となる日。
前日にアルコール類を大量摂取すると翌日は早起きしてしまうという、寝る為には体力が必要であるのにも関わらず全く備わっていない老人の如く早朝に目覚める。
空は曇天。
NHKを観ると、午後から雨になるとの予報。
予想はしていたが、思わぬ展開に愕然とする。
会の中止も考慮に入れなければ、とペシミスティックなホスト役。
「とりあえず秋刀魚を食おう」と男は言った。
こんな時間に開いてる店などあるものか、と近所にあるスーパーマーケットの営業時間を調べてみる。

この「ｈ」って何でしたっけ。
そんな質問すらも愚問としてスルーされ、とりあえず店へと向かうと開いている様子。
「秋刀魚置いてないみたいだから鯵にしよう」と開きを2尾、併せて大根、豆腐、白米を購入。
設置完了、後は炭火を熾すだけ
炭に向かい合うこと数十分、火が点き難いとされる備長炭と格闘してようやく着火。
意地になって段ボールだけでの点火を目指した結果、団扇を持った手がしばらくの間使い物にならない。
炭火がじうじうと鯵の脂を焦がす
動かない右手から箸を取り落としながらも、鯵と共におそろしく早い朝食を済ました頃、迎え酒が効いたのか睡魔が襲う。
しばし仮眠。
4時間後に幾人かと合流し、件のスーパーへと足を運び食材、アルコール類を購入。
朝方並んでなかった秋刀魚は3尾買う。

秋刀魚が吐き出す白煙の凄まじさに通報されまいかと怯える
宴は深夜まで及び、死屍累々と横たわるゲスト達の邪魔にならないようにそっとベランダへ出て、未だ消えない街の灯りを映し出した曇天を眺めながらぐったりと横になるのだった。
