従来であれば乗る船に船頭はふたりも要らないのだが、ただのひとりも居ないという状況は大変に心細いと思う。
以下は船頭なき泥舟が大時化に巻き込まれる直前の記録である。

･･･大嵐が過ぎ去った後、気が付けば二軒目に来ている。
会計時の支払いの記憶は何一つ定かではないが、誰かが泣いたのだろうか。
それでも舟は沈んでいないと言い張れるのは、明日という日があるからなのだ。（何も云っていない）
